Credibility


- Spock revised the book Baby and Child Care (1968) - 50% drop rate in sales

- (1978) Revised the book once again after feminists objected to father-mother stereotypes

- Deleted "sexist" material and encouraged fathers on bigger parental responsibilities

- Spock kept up with contemporary times (as seen from revisions)

- He contributed to social issues like daycare centers, single parents, and mothers in the workforce

Furthering the discipline of psychology

- Spock's theories and ideas brought upon society a revolution in parenting

- Psychologists before him never emphasized on the importance of proper parenting

- His ideas opened many new doors for psychologists to research on the relationship between parent and child

- His novel Baby and Child Care came with great success, becoming a great influence on parents and psychologists

- Changed the belief of strict discipline to treating children as individuals and bestowing affection

Benjamin Spock's contributions to parents and children have left a great impact on the world it self, many authors have wrote a book about it .

- Told parents that picking up infants when they cried would only spoil them
- Cuddling them and showing them affection would make a child feel secure and make them happier
-Encouraged parents to be flexible and see the child as an individual and not as someone that physically attached to them
- Told parents that parenting could be fun and that mothers and fathers would enjoy their children and steer them in the right path

- Worked for disabled children at a camp for three years in the summer (during years at Yale)

- Completed the book after two years of service in U.S. Navy
- Jane Spock helped with completing the book "Baby and Child Care

Early Life

- Oldest child in his family
- Father was a successful lawyer
- Attended private school called Phillips Academy
- Majored in English Literature in 1921 at Yale University
- Member of a rowing crew in the 1924 Olympics, won a gold medal for his participation on an eight man team
- Transferred to Columbia University in 1925 and completed pediatrics in psychiatry
- Married Jane Davenport Cheney in 1927, and had two sons
- Graduated Columbia University in 1929 as the best student in his class
